Andrea Palone, PhD student in our group under the supervision of Prof. Miquel Costas and Prof. Massimo Bietti (Università degli Studi di Roma "Tor Vergata", Italy), was awarded with a Research Lilly Award given by the international pharmaceutical company Lilly and the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry (RSEQ). These awards recognize the research excellence of PhD student in organic, analytical and pharmaceutical chemistry and they intend to strengthen the interaction between industry and academia.
Andrea was one of the winners of the 22th edition, together with Marcos Vilela (Universidade de Santiago de Compostela) and Beatriz Arévalo (Universidad Complutense de Madrid). The three theses deal with synthetic methodology, an area of chemistry dedicated to the development of tools to transform chemical bonds, fundamental in research fields such as drug design. Specifically, Andrea's research is based on the strategic and enantioselective oxygenation of alipatic C-H bonds, which has an attractive potential for organic synthesis as oxygenated moieties are very versatile and can be used as valuable synthetic intermediates and key components in the structure of natural products and drugs.

As one of the winners, Andrea will receive an economic prize of 2000€ and will be presenting an invited lecture in the XXIX Biennial Meeting of Organic Chemistry of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry in Tenerife (June 26th-28th). Congratulations Andrea!
